Love Birds is a brand-new musical, inspired by the Sherman Brothers musical Mary Poppins, written by Robert J Sherman (a.k.a. Robbie) and directed by Stewart Nicholls. But it’s not the first time these two have collaborated on something inspired by the Sherman Brothers.
Robbie is the son of the late, legendary lyricist Robert B Sherman, who with his brother Richard wrote the enduring songs to Disney’s Mary Poppins, as well as other screen musical classics including The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Aristocats.
Last year, to pay tribute to his father, who passed away on 6 March 2012, Robbie compiled and narrated the critically acclaimed cabaret revue A Spoonful of Sherman, celebrating 90 years and three generations of Sherman music– which was directed by Stewart.
A Spoonful of Sherman had two sell-out stints at London’s St James Studio Theatre in 2014 and is due to return for a major UK tour later this year. In the meantime – and how’s THIS for pass-the-baton timing?! – the official cast recording of A Spoonful of Sherman is released this coming Monday (13 July 2015), which also happens to be the first day of rehearsals for Love Birds!
The original London company of A Spoonful of Sherman – two two-time Olivier nominees, Emma Williams (who, back in 2002, made her professional debut starring as Truly Scrumptious alongside Michael Ball in the stage adaptation of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium) and Charlotte Wakefield, Greg Castiglioni and Stuart Matthew Price – feature on the official cast recording.
Hint, hint: one of them will be reuniting with Robbie and Stewart to get his vocal chords around some more Sherman songs in Love Birds…. Watch out for our cast announcement tomorrow.
More about A Spoonful of Sherman cast recording
Al Sherman was one of the most sought after songwriters on Tin Pan Alley in the 20s, 30s and 40s, with songs recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, amongst others. Al’s sons, Robert and Richard Sherman, are the most successful song-writing partnership in the history of Hollywood, composing more movie musical songs and acclaimed film scores than any other writing team. Their Oscar winning songs from shows such as Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and The Slipper and The Rose have entertained the world for more than 60 years.
Robert’s son Robbie was the youngest songwriter to join the Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) fraternity, and has gone on to write for television, film and theatre. In 2014, together with musical director Colin Billing, Robbie created A Spoonful of Sherman to celebrate his family’s astonishing songwriting legacy.
The double-disc recording comes complete with a 20-page colour booklet, narration by Robert J Sherman, and features over 40 classic Sherman songs. The Cast Recording is produced by SimG Records, the leading independent label supporting new musical theatre writers and artists in the UK.
